Cork Property News – Ballyphehane and Turners Cross

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Next up on our continuing posts on regions to look out for Property  in Cork City is those of Ballyphehane and Turners Cross.

A nice suburb in the south of cork city, Ballyphehane is cushioned by Turners Cross, and is surrounded to the west by the Lough and Togher. It has a number of sporting fixtures and is very close to the South Link Ring road thus being by car directly accessible to the main regions into and out of the city centre.

Amenities: There are many local corner shops, pubs, restaurants, takeways (Lennoxs to note) and main services (hairdressers, credit unions, community centres, libraries etc) in and around the area of Ballyphehane, while the region of Turner’s Cross is a busy little hub well facilitated with a number of pubs, restaurants and shops etc. to its credit.

Ballyphehane has a renovated library located on Tory Top Road opposite a large park, close to the Ballyphehane Community Centre which  includes a community room that often accommodates a wide variety of activities.

Tory Top Park is nearby with its many sports pitches which host a majority of  juvenile games.

There are several schools in the area, Maria Assumpta Girls National School, Presentation Secondary School, run under the Presentation Sisters caters for the girls of the area. While Réalt na Maidine (Morning Star) National School Morning Star School is the primary school for boys. A co-educational Gaelscoil, Gaelscoil an Teaghlaigh Naoifa  is also located near Ballyphehane Community Centre.

Attractions: The main advantages of Ballyphehane is its close proximity to the scenic Lough area and its location like Togher to its west, centrally being in between the city centre and Wilton regions and thus easy to approach both areas by foot if you enjoy a good walk.

The main attraction that sets Ballyphehane apart from Togher is the presence of Musgrave Park the main rugby pitch in Cork city where local teams Dolphin and Sunday’s Well Rugby regularly play their home matches. The most important team though to play here is not the locals but the Munster Rugby team who play one half of their home matches here (the other half is in Thomond Park in Limerick).

Another big attraction in Turners Cross is the football stadium there is home to the Munster Football Association, and is where the League of Ireland side Cork City FORAS Co-op play their home matches. The stadium sees a large volume of matches every year – these include League of Ireland games as well as local, regional, national, and international matches and cup finals at schoolboy, junior, intermediate, senior, and underage international level.

With such a range of sporting fixtures it is not surprising that there are a range of sports clubs notably GAA, rugby and soccer and many other clubs to check out in the area.

Location and Transport: Like Togher, Ballyphehane and the Turners Cross area is centrally located to avail of both areas of Cork city. Ballyphehane and Turners Cross though is very close to Cork airport. Turner’s Cross is situated on the main South Link Ring road that heads into the city allowing you direct access to the Kinsale roundabout availing of the choices of heading south towards the airport, north to the city centre, west to the N71 and on to the Sarsfield and Bandon roundabouts towards West Cork, Ballincollig and Kerry or eastwards onto Mahon Point, the Tunnel and onto the rest of the country. All in all from a driving point of view Ballyphehane and in particular Turners Cross is an ideal spot for a straight drive to the main places in and out of the city.

Bus routes: The No. 3 bus from Farranrae – to city centre and onto Ballyphehane via Turners Cross is the main bus route to the city centre while the southern orbital No. 19 takes one out to Mahon or onto Bishopstown going through Ballyphehane along the way.

This area is great for rugby and soccer fans to avail of the opportunity to see local and international league teams in action and thus coupled with its proximity to the main roads in and out of the city and within walking distance of the city centre, the Lough and the Wilton areas makes living in the Ballyphehane and Turners Cross suburbs a good idea.
